Road Tripping Up California’s Coastline

My close friend, Christine, and I culminated our Los Angeles adventure with a trip up California’s Highway 101 and 1 along the coastline last weekend — having been my first time up the coast, I had little idea of what to expect beyond hearing that it’s one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

We started the drive up the 5 and stopped in San Louis Obispo for a quick lunch at Pluto’s Fresh Food for a Hungry Universe (try saying that five times fast!).

We then switched to Highway 101 and were treated to glimpses of the ocean and tiny beach towns. Everything, from the weather to the views to our music was just perfect (The Temper Trap radio on Pandora was our playlist of choice). Of the few perfect days that come to mind, leisurely driving through a beautiful coast such as this is now certainly one of them. The only thing I could have wished for was a second pair of eyes to take in all the beauty (or maybe a driverless car).

A stop near Hearst Castle

California State Route 1 is secluded and quiet, the road filled with twists and turns that forced our full attention toward the gorgeous landscape. Each turn was more beautiful than the last! We took several stops and even explored the coastline during sunset.

The baby SMART car made the trip :)

We were exhausted by the end of drive, but it was so worth it. I read a a couple articles that recommend taking several days to fully enjoy everything the coast has to offer (camping in Big Sur is supposed to be phenomenal), and I definitely want to make the trip again soon. For those who have been, I would love to hear any other recommended pit stops along the coast (any eating spots?)!
